Northtech Machine Northtech’s 40 Year History... Beginning as a thought in 1979, two friends became partners and started a company in a small corner office of Bargain Supply Company, a hardware and tool supply house in Louisville, Kentucky. Word moved fast about this new company offering a more rugged and dependable grade of machinery for hobbyists and the Do-it-Yourself (DIY) market. It took just a few short years to discover that the same demand existed in the industrial division of woodworking machinery. In the mid-80s, they began to offer industrial woodworking machinery as well as continue to offer machinery for the hobbyist and DIY market. A crossroad in 1992 steered the company to an almost exclusively classical solid wood indus- trial machinery offering, which has been the foundation of Northtech ever since. In 1994 the decision was made to relocate across the street to Northtech’s own 30,000sf building. This new space allowed for a much-needed parts and service department, which rocketed Northtech Industrial Machinery into other industries outside of woodworking. Often stocking over 800 new and used machines, Northtech grew into these other areas such as metalworking and plastic machinery steadily. Over the next two decades, Northtech became a staple in factories of all sizes across America, and in 2016 the Northtech name was acquired and reorganized by the Koetter family of Starlight, Indiana. Being the second and third generation of a family-owned woodworking business that started in 1959 just a few miles from Louisville, the Koetters had already partnered with Northtech for over 25 years on machinery. This partnership made Northtech one of the primary machinery suppliers in what grew to be an almost 800,000sf woodworking powerhouse in the Midwest. Along with this new leadership, machinery ex- perience and energy came, the third building to showcase a Northtech logo. The main idea of the ROBA Tech principle is to avoid the main disadvantage of all today known drum based brush sanding machines: Those who work normally with sanding drum with a diameter of about 310 mm are only in a very small area in touch with the work piece, about 30 mm. Only in the vertex of the circle circumference of the tool a sanding process is possible. The innovative and patented ROBA Tech is equipped with a totally new developed sanding belt containing 174 sanding strips and provides a sanding area of approx. 1300 x 1500 mm in touch with the workpiece and more than 250 meters of sanding material on all aggregates. This is unique on the market of brush sanding machines. A 360 ° rotation of the sanding aggregate over the work piece makes it possible to reach all edges and corners of a workpiece. New is the reinforced disk unit, which now can also be used for light structuring and calibration work. For this purpose it is placed at the inlet of the machine and adapted to this task by the use of special disc tools: Discs with steel wires are used for texturing, being able to perform regardless of the grain direction of the wood. The plain Micron discs are used to sand flat surfaces and create a chaotic sanding pattern that can be easily covered by a topcoat. Conical discs make it easier to sand part edges and V-shaped groves, allowing the sanding tool a better reach of the milled contours. In order to use Micron or conical discs, it makes sense to install the disk unit at the machine inlet. The subsequent efficient ROBA Tech sanding belt takes over the final fine work. When the machine is being phased out, many customers choose a double brush unit, which makes ROBA Tech even more flexible when jumping back and forth between solid wood and lacquer sanding tasks. It is also possible to design this unit as a cleaning station. The intensive sanding of the ROBA Tech unit needs a very good vacuum to hold even small parts securely. A typical MB design of the vacuum channels ensures that an optimal holding force is generated with minimal vacuum fan power. Processing times are considerably shortened. The ROBA Duplex uses a divided sanding belt that is equipped with slots. 100mm long sanding brushes with the desired grit are inserted from above and below into these slots. This means that two different abrasive trimmings can be used, for example a K120 grit at the top for coarse sanding and a K240 grit at the bottom for lacquer sanding. The pneumatic lifting from sanding area to sanding area is executed by a switch. This means that there is no time-consuming machine set-up necessary if you want to change the process. The system is based on a belt system instead of cylindrical sanding brushes. The advantage over cylindrical tools is obvious: the belt ensures a flat and wave-free sanding. The workpieces are only pressed against the sanding belt and do not have to be laboriously guided past the tool. This results in significantly shorter processing times, while offering improved sanding quality. A constant oscillation of the unit ensures better utilization of the sanding media and blurs possible sand marks. MB has developed a Twin Duplex for companies who need more capacity when working with the ROBA Duplex. This machine has a sanding belt accessible from both sides and, equipped with two worktables, can be used by two operators at the same time. If long workpieces, such as tabletops, must be edge sanded, MB offers the ROBA Duplex XL. Here the user has a work area of approx. 1950mm.
